How to become a UAV operator in the Armed Forces of Ukraine

A UAV operator is a military personnel who controls unmanned aerial vehicles to perform combat missions. Such missions include:

What it takes to become a UAV operator

What drones do Ukrainian Armed Forces operators use

Unmanned aerial vehicles can be divided into four classes. They differ in characteristics and intended purpose.‍

• Class 1 – micro drones, which are usually used in civilian life. In Ukraine, the most popular models of this class are UAVs from the Chinese company DJI and the American Autel. They are small and relatively easy to use.
• Class 2 – medium-range drones that perform reconnaissance at tactical levels. These are the Ukrainian UAVs “Leleka-100” and “Furya”. Specially designed for military purposes, these devices can operate for three hours.
• Class 3 – operational-tactical drones that can fly continuously for up to 10 hours, have an increased range, are used for enemy surveillance and military planning. Ukrainian-made PD-2 and Raybird-3 UAVs fall into this category.
• Class 4 – strategic UAVs, or strike UAVs. The Turkish Bayraktar TB-2 is one of them. In addition to conducting reconnaissance and carrying guided bombs, it can stay in the air for 24 hours.

Is it possible to become a UAV operator without experience

Yes. Many drone operators started their careers without any prior experience. The key is a willingness to learn, a technical mindset, and a willingness to work in a team.

In most units, recruits undergo simulator training, after which they move on to practical flights.
